It derives its unique name from the unit we measure electricity in, known as ohms.

How does an ohmmeter work?

An ohmmeter works by using 2 probes that send a current through the circuit. This measures how much resistance that current encounters, which identifies if electricity is present and how much is surging through it. It’s important to get the right setup on your ohmmeter, after that, you can use it to measure the resistance of any circuit simply by holding the probes on each end of it.

Different Types of Ohmmeters

  • Multi-Range Ohmmeter – These are connected in parallel to the meter itself in order to measure the resistance. The meter is adjusted to display full-scale deflection, making this one of the most commonly used ohmmeter tools today.
