Microsoft Brokers Deal to Renew Blizzard and NetEase Partnership, Bringing Popular Games Back to China

Microsoft Brokers Deal to Renew Blizzard and NetEase Partnership

Microsoft has successfully negotiated a renewed partnership between Blizzard Entertainment and NetEase, paving the way for the return of major video game titles to the Chinese market. This collaboration will reintroduce beloved games such as World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and others from the Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, and StarCraft series to mainland China starting this summer.

The agreement marks a significant reconciliation, facilitated by Microsoft following its acquisition of Blizzard. The renewed deal not only brings these popular titles back to China but also establishes a broader collaboration between Blizzard and NetEase, driven by a mutual interest in delivering innovative gaming experiences across various platforms and markets.

The relationship between Blizzard and NetEase had previously soured, leading to a public split in November 2022. Blizzard had expressed that it could not renew its agreement with NetEase in a manner consistent with its operational principles and commitments to its players and employees. Meanwhile, NetEase described its negotiations as earnest but cited “material differences on key terms” as the reason for the impasse, even suggesting that the loss of Blizzard’s games would not significantly impact its financial results.

Despite exploring partnerships with several other potential partners in China, Blizzard has now rekindled its 15-year relationship with NetEase. Johanna Faries, President of Blizzard Entertainment, expressed enthusiasm about the reunion, highlighting the deep appreciation for the collaboration between their teams and a commitment to delivering exceptional gaming experiences to Chinese players.

“We are immensely grateful for the passion the Chinese community has shown for Blizzard games over the years, and we are focused on bringing our universes back to players with excellence and dedication,” said Faries.

William Ding, CEO and Director of NetEase, echoed this sentiment, noting that the renewed partnership is “built on trust and mutual respect” and underscores both companies’ commitment to providing exhilarating and creative entertainment experiences.
