AMD’s HYPR-RX Failure: A Promise Unfulfilled

AMD's HYPR-RX Failure

In the latter half of 2022, just before the launch of AMD’s high-performance GPUs, the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, the company presented HYPR-RX, a new performance-enhancing technology. This system was touted as a means to significantly boost frame rates on supported Radeon GPUs. The much-anticipated technology was expected to be released during the first half of 2023. Yet, as the second half of 2023 has now arrived, it appears AMD has missed its own deadline.

AMD’s HYPR-RX was designed as a one-click solution within AMD’s Adrenaline software, combining several existing technologies: AMD Anti-Lag, Radeon Boost, and Radeon Super Resolution (RSR). This combination aimed to deliver fast frame rates and lower latency in a unified package, making it particularly beneficial for competitive games where smooth and reliable performance is paramount.

AMD Anti-Lag, similar to NVIDIA’s Reflex, is designed to minimize the delay between user input and its display result, a feature crucial for fast-paced games such as Apex Legends. Meanwhile, Radeon Boost provides image-scaling technology that reduces resolution during rapid motion, hence decreasing the impact on overall visual fidelity. Lastly, Radeon Super Resolution offers a driver-side version of FSR 1.0’s upscaling, making it game-independent and similar to how NVIDIA’s Image Scaling operates in GeForce Experience.

The HYPR-RX technology was initially showcased in November 2022, with promises of a launch in the first half of 2023. However, the company seems to have either neglected to inform the press about any potential delays or completely overlooked HYPR-RX, as the first half of 2023 has passed with no word from AMD on the technology’s release date.

For gamers who are less familiar with graphics settings or technologies, or those who simply want to play games without fussing over GPU settings, HYPR-RX was intended to be a useful tool. It was designed to function similarly to the “GeForce Experience” for AMD gamers, enabling driver-level AMD technologies rather than adjusting in-game graphics settings.

Despite the disappointment surrounding HYPR-RX’s delayed release, it’s essential to note that the technology doesn’t introduce any new features that haven’t been seen before. Users can still manually enable RSR, Anti-Lag, and Boost in the AMD Adrenalin control panel to replicate HYPR-RX’s capabilities. Similarly, Nvidia users can improve performance by enabling Ultra Low Latency mode and Nvidia Image Scaling (NIS) in the Nvidia Control Panel.
