Google Translate Expands to 110 New Languages, Setting a New Benchmark
Google Translate has taken a giant leap in bridging language barriers by adding 110 new languages to its platform. This monumental update announced recently, brings the total number of languages supported by Google Translate to an impressive 243.
This expansion significantly surpasses its competitors, with Apple Translate supporting 20 languages and Microsoft Translator supporting 135 languages.
The addition of these new languages is made possible by Google’s advanced PaLM 2 large language model. Among the new languages are Afar, Cantonese, Manx, NKo, Punjabi (Shahmukhi), Tamazight (Amazigh), and Tok Pisin. These languages are spoken by over 614 million people, which represents around 8% of the global population.
Google has highlighted that this update includes not only widely spoken global languages but also those of smaller indigenous communities. A quarter of the new languages come from Africa, marking the most significant addition of African languages in Google Translate’s history. This includes languages such as Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda, and Wolof.
