Google DeepMind's Gemini

In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), Google’s DeepMind is a force to be reckoned with. Recently, the company has revealed its next big project: Gemini, a chatbot that is expected to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

DeepMind’s Gemini is a large language model that operates with text, similar to GPT-4, which powers ChatGPT. the DeepMind team is aiming to take Gemini beyond ChatGPT’s current capabilities by integrating it with algorithms used by AlphaGo, an AI system from DeepMind that was the first to defeat a professional human player in the board game Go.

One of the key differentiators of Gemini is its potential “multimodal” capabilities. Unlike ChatGPT, which is a text-only model, Gemini, as a multimodal model, could understand and generate text, code, and images. This means that Gemini could be used for a wider range of tasks than ChatGPT. Gemini is also said to come with abilities like memory and planning, which could be used to create new types of AI-powered apps that aren’t possible with ChatGPT, such as an AI-powered personal assistant that could remember your preferences and help plan your day.

DeepMind and Google’s Brain AI lab are collaborating on Gemini, with the majority of recent AI innovations have come from either of these two entities. The team is using all of YouTube’s videos, comments, and transcripts as a primary training data source for Gemini.

Despite the ambitious plans, the road to Gemini’s completion is expected to be challenging and time-consuming. The new AI development will require a fair bit of time before it’s ready to release. It’s estimated that it will likely be a matter of months before anything is unveiled, with a hefty price tag that could reach into the hundreds of millions.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has expressed concern about the necessity to implement more research into tests, as AI can be tricky to evaluate. Finding ways to investigate its scope and performance will aid in understanding its capabilities and how well engineers can control the AI. This is crucial to preventing the unintended development of dangerous threats like malicious software using their tools.

The race for dominance in the generative AI space, including text-analyzing AI like Gemini, is heating up, with sky-high investor and customer enthusiasm. The market for generative AI could reach $109.37 billion by 2030, an increase of 35.6% from 2030.
