OpenAI Rolls Out ‘Memory’ Feature for ChatGPT Plus Subscribers
OpenAI has introduced a significant enhancement to its ChatGPT service, making the ‘Memory’ feature accessible to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This new functionality aims to streamline interactions by allowing the AI to retain information across sessions, reducing the need for users to input the same details repeatedly.
Launched on Monday, the Memory feature enables ChatGPT to remember details shared by users, such as personal preferences or specific tasks, and utilize this stored information in future interactions. This capability is illustrated in a recent demonstration where ChatGPT memorizes that a user lives with two pets and has a young child, using this information to tailor subsequent conversations.
This feature is not just about enhancing user convenience; it’s also equipped with tools for managing this memory. Users can review and edit their stored information by interacting with the “Memory updated” notification, which allows access to the full memory history where adjustments can be made.
For those concerned about privacy, OpenAI has provided options to toggle the Memory feature on or off. Users can control this setting and delete memories through their profile settings under the ‘Personalization’ tab. This tab also houses the Custom Instructions feature, which serves a similar purpose by saving recurring instructions.
Although now available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers, those in Europe and South Korea must wait, as the feature has not yet been rolled out in these regions. OpenAI has announced plans to extend Memory to its Team, Enterprise, and GPT versions, though a specific timeline for these expansions remains unclear.
