Apple’s iOS 17 Screen Distance Feature
Apple’s iOS 17 introduces a new Screen Distance feature that could play a significant role in reducing eye strain and mitigating the risk of nearsightedness, especially in children. This opt-in feature alerts user when they hold their iPhone or iPad too close to their eyes for an extended period, promoting healthier viewing habits.
The Screen Distance feature can be activated through the Settings app, under the Screen Time Screen Distance path. It is compatible with all iPhone and iPad Pro models equipped with Face ID, leveraging the same TrueDepth camera that powers Face ID to gauge the distance between the device’s screen and the user’s eyes. When the device is held closer than 12 inches to the eyes for an extended period, a full-screen alert prompts users to position their device farther away.
Upon enabling the feature, users receive an “iPhone is Too Close” warning as necessary. After repositioning the iPhone to a safer distance, a checkmark appears on the screen, allowing users to tap the “Continue” button and proceed with their activities.
As of now, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, which include the Screen Distance feature, are available in beta for users with an Apple developer account. The official release is slated for later this year. The feature is adaptable and can be toggled on or off as desired. Devices compatible with Screen Distance include the iPhone XS and newer models, as well as 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models released in 2018 and later.
