Google Expands AI Capabilities to More Pixel Devices with Latest Update
Google has initiated a significant update for its Pixel smartphones, extending advanced AI features to more models and introducing functionality that enhances user experience, particularly for those using budget-friendly options. The update, which starts today, notably includes the extension of the Gemini Nano AI model to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8A. This model was previously exclusive to the higher-end Pixel 8 Pro.
The move by Google to democratize AI features across more devices contrasts with Apple’s recent strategy, which limits new AI capabilities to its latest iPhone 15 Pro model. For Pixel 8 and Pixel 8A users, activating the Gemini Nano model involves navigating to the developer settings—a decision Google says aims to cater to users who are more aware of how running such sophisticated AI might affect their device’s performance. These AI capabilities facilitate enhanced features like intelligent replies and summarized transcripts in voice recordings.
Moreover, the update introduces a new Find My Device feature for the Pixel 8 series, capable of locating phones even when powered off or after the battery has run out, for up to 23 hours. Another significant addition is the support for DisplayPort output via USB-C, allowing users to project their phone screens onto larger displays.
For owners of older and less expensive Pixel models, the update isn’t without benefits. It brings a useful reverse phone number lookup directly from the call log, helping users identify unknown callers. This feature will be available on the Pixel Fold as well as on Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 onwards.
The update also enhances photo capabilities across these devices. The Pixel Fold, along with the Pro versions of the Pixel 6, 7, and 8, now supports manual selection of camera lenses during photography, offering more creative control. HDR Plus now includes a “best moment” detection feature, optimizing photo quality without manual input.
