Google Maps Display on Android Auto
Google has removed a restriction on Android Auto that limited the simultaneous use of Google Maps on both the user’s phone and car display. This update comes after a brief period in February when the feature was introduced and then promptly removed, but its recent reappearance seems to indicate that it’s here to stay.
Before this change, if Android Auto was active, users were only able to view turn-by-turn navigation, ETA, distance remaining, and music controls on the larger screen of their car’s head unit. Any interaction with Google Maps on the user’s phone, such as searching for new destinations, was disabled. This limitation was presumably in place for safety reasons, to prevent driver distraction. However, this change could prove especially useful for users who have a co-pilot who can provide more detailed directions using the Android Auto-connected phone.
This feature’s return has been welcomed by many Android Auto users, who have expressed their approval on platforms like Reddit. The ability to access Google Maps’ additional features on the phone provides a more fully functional experience, according to users.
Google has also resolved a major bug that affected Google Maps on Android Auto. The bug, which provided incorrect roundabout information on the dashboard, caused confusion and made stressful journeys even more so for many drivers. This issue was reported on Google’s forums in July, with users stating that the dashboard navigation would erroneously instruct the driver to turn around, regardless of the chosen roundabout exit.
The problem has been addressed in the latest update, with Google confirming that version 10.81 of Google Maps will no longer include incorrect roundabout guidance. Users are advised to install the latest version of Google Maps to benefit from the improvements and fixes that have been made.
