Roll – AI-powered iPhone App, Revolutionizes Video Production
Roll, a newly launched company, is taking the video production industry by storm with their innovative application that employs intelligent artificial intelligence. This tool has been designed to transform how iPhones are used in video production, specifically for talking head videos and remote interviews.
The application uses cloud-based AI technology to convert video data captured by an iPhone into a professional-looking production. This is achieved through the simulated slider, dolly, and jib movements, as well as simulated bokeh, which enhances the cinematic quality of the footage.
The Founder and CEO of Roll, Faizan Buzdar, shared his thoughts on the future of video production. “Video production is ripe for disruption from the cloud. Large file sizes, complex processing, and multi-person review cycles make it the perfect candidate to have outsized benefits from cloud and AI technologies like large-scale storage, computing, and real-time sharing and collaboration,” he stated.
The app has been designed to be easy to use, requiring only the installation of the app and account creation to get started. The videos created by Roll are automatically edited by AI, but users have the flexibility to customize different camera movements and add AI-generated bokeh to create a unique final video.
Interestingly, the app’s AI power is boosted by a feature known as a “slate”. This involves the user stepping out of the frame and then re-entering, stating their name, counting to three, and clapping. This process helps the app identify the user and analyze the room’s audio qualities, enabling it to improve over time and even recreate a user’s room in 3D, simulating camera movement despite the iPhone being stationary.
The Roll team is also working on additional features, including an easy-to-use text-based editor. This feature will allow users to cut lines, change camera angles, add movements and visual effects in a single click, and collaborate in the editing process in real-time.
With a mission to replace expensive, hard-to-use gear with the smartphones that many people already have in their pockets, Roll has managed to make the smartphone outperform its typical results. Users can record an interview and publish it within minutes of finishing the call across multiple online platforms, all thanks to AI.
Despite the increasing concern about AI’s influence over daily life, Roll uses AI to enhance the capabilities of iPhone’s cameras and make high-quality content creation more accessible. It does not use AI to fundamentally alter or replace anything but rather to refine what’s already there and make it look more polished and cinematic.
Roll’s potential in remote communication scenarios is also noteworthy. For instance, a journalist in a warzone could quickly capture high-quality footage and use Roll’s AI technology to add a robust layer of polish to the content.
Buzdar added, “Roll is fundamentally changing the way we create videos today by automating the entire process — we can get you from recording to publishing in 15 minutes. We’re excited to get it out in the world to see what incredible videos creators and businesses will make with it. We believe that Roll could become the future of video production”.
While the app is designed for iPhones, users can also participate in a Roll meeting from the web, albeit without the same sophisticated treatment as iPhone-captured footage. Users can also connect mirrorless cameras to their computers for use with the app. It opens up the potential for AI to be used to help make footage and audio from many different sources look and sounds more cohesive.
Concerning iPhone compatibility, Roll supports any iPhone capable of running the latest version of iOS, regardless of whether it has telephoto cameras.
With the advent of Roll, video production, especially remote video creation, is set to undergo a major transformation, making it easier, quicker, and more cost-effective for users to produce high-quality, professional-looking videos. The application seems to be breaking new ground and is likely to become an essential tool for video creators, reporters, and businesses alike.
